Aerated Greens, Explained: What Punching Means and When Texas Courses Do It

You booked a great tee time and found the greens covered in holes and sand. Welcome to aeration season. It happens at every course, and it is a sign the superintendent is doing the job right. Here is what punching means, when North Texas courses do it, and how to avoid the surprise.
What aeration is
Aeration pulls thousands of small cores from the green to relieve compaction, feed the roots air and water, and control thatch, then topdresses with sand. It looks brutal for two weeks, then the greens come back healthier and truer. Skipping it is how greens die in a Texas summer.
When North Texas courses aerate
Most DFW greens are bermudagrass, which heals fastest in warm growing weather. Typical windows:
- May and June: the main core aeration, healing in two to three weeks.
- August into early September: a second punching or lighter venting at some courses.
- October and November: fall overseeding of fairways and tees with ryegrass, which can bring cart restrictions while seed establishes.
Every course sets its own calendar and weather moves dates, so treat these as when to start asking.
How long until greens are good
Two to three weeks in growing season, with the first week the roughest: sandy, bumpy, slow. Venting heals in days. Many courses discount during recovery, a fair deal if you want reps more than a score.
How to find out before you book
Ask the pro shop directly. Check the course website and Facebook for announced dates. And check golfer reports: on LinksCoach Golf, every DFW course page has a Conditions tab where our daily scan flags announced aeration and members who just played flag Aerated greens with a rating of how they are actually rolling, which matters more than the date.
Frequently asked questions
Should I still play on aerated greens? For practice and reps, yes, especially discounted. For a score or a money game, wait two weeks.
Why aerate when the weather is perfect? Recovery is fastest exactly when growing conditions are best. Perfect golf weeks and perfect aeration weeks are the same weeks.
How do I find aeration dates near me? Course websites and Facebook for announcements, the pro shop to confirm, and the Conditions tab on LinksCoach Golf for both announced dates and what members just found.
